One-on-One

One-on-ones are the single most important recurring meeting you have with your team. They’re where trust is built, where small problems get surfaced before they become big ones, and where growth conversations actually happen.

A well-run 1:1 helps you:

  • Build trust over time: Consistency matters more than any single meeting. Showing up prepared signals that you take the relationship seriously.
  • Catch issues early: Frustrations, blockers, and doubts rarely arrive in a Slack message. They come out in a quiet room with the right question.
  • Support growth: Careers are shaped in 1:1s, through feedback, coaching, and conversations about what’s next.
  • Stay aligned: A few minutes spent on priorities and context prevents hours of rework later.

The goal isn’t to run through a checklist; it’s to have a focused, honest conversation. EM Kit gives you the prep and follow-up scaffolding so you can spend the meeting itself actually listening.

There are two ways to start a 1:1:

From the Home page — if the Calendar integration is connected, the Coming up widget automatically detects 1:1 meetings on your calendar. Click Prepare 1:1 next to the event and EM Kit creates a new note pre-filled with the meeting’s date and linked to the calendar event.

From the member page:

  1. Open My Team from the left sidebar.
  2. Select a team member.
  3. Open the One-on-Ones tab.
  4. Click New 1:1.

You can also link a manually-created 1:1 to a calendar event after the fact from the note’s calendar event panel — see Calendar integration.
